I went camping with my wife and some friends this weekend and I was able to sneak off for a couple hours of detecting. I had been to this spot before a couple times. Its a small sledding hill and I've found lots of clad and a silver Rosie there before. That's all I was hoping for on this hunt.
Imagine my surprise when I got a zinc penny signal and I carelessly dug for what I thought was another zincoln when out popped a gold eagle. Holy carp!!!!
I don't know the history of this site, but in the one photo you can see the faint traces of an old road. I sure hope this coin is the real deal. It's the right diameter, but I'm not sure what it's supposed to way. It's 16.6 grams, does that sound right?
You just never know what you're going to dig or where you're going to dig it. LOVE THIS HOBBY!!!!
Soaked the coin in distilled water overnight and most of the gunk rinsed right off.
