I was doing a tot lot in a very old park. I had a large target signal as my F75 just loves fine gold chains. So this chain really made it sing. There was a lot of folks there today and I quickly put it in my pocket as the detector was making a high pitch howl noise I just love to hear. It wasn't long before I found the lil gold lizard. My pinpointer died today, and hunting with out it slowed me down a bit. Im going back to this park soon.

Any ideas how to know if its solid gold or not, it was ringing up a real low reading on the VDI, a 17.

Get it tested! Could be plated (IF it is holding a magnet to it and it sticks to it you have a base metal that is steel). But it could be gold over silver (or another metal). I'd suggest taking it in to be tested. I like the lizard!

You could take it to a jewelry store or gold buyer and have them test it. Or just get a metal testing acid kit and do it yourself. They're about $15 online.

A high pitched howl on my F75 LTD means silver, copper or something like that. The detector has a hard time seeing the chain which would explain a low vdi. I hope it's the real deal, nice find regardless!

I know of NO detector that loves gold chains or makes high pitch noises on any. My guess is silver. Gold has properties all its own on ANY detector and most can only see one link.

I think you have a gold plated silver chain there. I guarentee if your machine found gold chains super well, EVERY water hunter would be buying one and waterproofing it.
