dug at 1800s site whats this relic

Dig this at a 1800s site not sure if its that old .
I know its a twist latch but im curious what it might have went to and possibly how old it might be .
Any ideas are greatly appreciated ty.

Its the "key" of civil war soldiers shoulder epauletts. :

Cool find...

Funny story how I knew what it is... I actually found one a year or so back and threw it away, I thought it was a purse latch... Then later saw pictures of these scale buttons and knew what I had found previously. Oh well... but it looks like you found a promising spot. Congrats on a great historical find. :cool:
