What a find. These are gag runners for a working harness for a working team of horses. They would install these behind the headstall of a working team of horses that would have to pull logs or something. They were for holding a long heavy duty rein ( like the rein guides ) that went to a hard bit so the horses would stop after being told to go go go sometimes with a whip so you can imagine how important it would be to stop the team. They used gag runners so they could yank the horses head upward and back, the surest way to try to stop on the go, feisty or spooked horses. HH 401K

Impressive ... leather still intact too .... so it must be a dry area. Any idea about age?

Invented in 1860

I would like to update this thread because of recent findings on gag runners. These findings are important in IDing gag runners vs. sword hangers seeing that similar gag runners were invented in 1860 with proof. There are no gag runners having both loops on the same piece before 1860. The frail brass - bronze sword hangers with both loops as one piece are made before 1860. Gag runners we know were invented in 1860 US Patent Office by William Robotham by inventing - adding one of the loops, that's what his patent was making both loops on the same piece. The gag strap loop and the check rein loop in one piece. Before this invention the loops were separate. Here is the link to his patent from The United States Patent and Trademark Office. http://pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?Docid=...&SectionNum=&idkey=NONE&Input=View+first+page klick full pages to the left for the entire document. So Scott all that proves is that Gag loops/ runners/swivels were around before 1860 and this man improved on their idea and patented it .

Scott what it claims is pretty vague at best , the link you provided with the drawing has both varieties they each have two loops that makes up one whole piece. Laugh all you want sir but you still haven't proven anything conclusive as far as evidence yet.

:shock::laughing:

Some neat finds what ever the age or history. Congrats! Jack
Thanks Jack! The history of these gag runners has been debated and it's good to finally put a time period on the one piece gag runner. I will keep updating this thread with tid-bits that come along. HH Scott
