Times, they are a changing...

My wife and kids are also tethered to their Idiot phones...zombies galore, it is really sad to think that many people don't/won't truly experience life, just existence.

Same here, my wife spends more time looking at the damm phone than anyyyyything! Sick of talking to the side of peoples heads...

Ha! They wouldn't have a clue, seriously. I'm not trying to be mean or bitter, but this current generation I'm dealing with is completely clueless. Simple things that you and I take for granted are beyond them. Case in point: reading a freaking ruler... Completely foreign to them. They know it's a ruler, they know it's used for measuring, they even know the little marks mean something, what exactly? Completely clueless. Really. As an art instructor we measure quite often, and these last few years I spend copious amounts of time teaching fundamentals instead of focused areas of design.

Not all, but most students simply can not use a a ruler. I use analogy of the dollar (quarters, halves) and reach some, but if we delve into eighths, or 16ths, or God forbid add fractions they are screwed. One student was measuring a mat for a photo, she was supposed to find the center, I showed her over and over. Walked her through it, and asked her what half of 10 was, she didn't know. I said don't be embarrassed, get out a piece of paper and see if you can figure it out. She stared at the paper for quite some time. I asked what was wrong, she said she didn't know how to do it. I said try 10 divided by 2, she stared at the paper for a long time. (I absolutely REFUSE to tell them, after all they're here to learn!) Finally, I begin to feel sorry for her, and ask her if her phone has a calculator. She dug it out and stared at it again for several minutes... I asked what was the deal now. She said she didn't know how to do it... Finally (with direction) she arrived at the correct answer. Wow. Then I asked her to find the center of the vertical measurement, "Ok, good, now what's half of 7 and a half?" She looked at me with a super wide Cheshire Cat smile and said "Nice try Sam, you're trying to trick me!" I was confused, and asked for clarification. She said completely sincere and honest "There is no half of seven and half, it's mathematically impossible."

Digital zombies.

I knew it was bad out there now, but this bad?!!?
This is scary...really.

Yesterday and today.

It is sad, but in my opinion it's party due to technology and the no child left behind policies. Students are forced to pass the standardized tests, if they don't pass it's the end of the world, therefore the teachers must teach for the test. In the old days students would learn by cross disciplinary activities, shop class does a fine job of reiterating simple math skills, not to mention music, art, and home economics.

The amount of remedial reading classes, fundamental math and English classes we must offer high school graduates is appalling. The real losers are the kids, they are just Guinea pigs in a poorly executed experiment.

DO NOT ASSUME a holder of a high school diploma can read or write, seriously.

A huge percentage of them must take remedial classes in college before they can begin courses on their degrees! Just read an article about that the other day...

Reminds me of a friend back in high school, he was talented in football and had won the genetics lottery, 6 ft 245lbs at 16 years old, our star running back...

Academically, he had always cheated on tests, had others do his homework etc... well as fate would have it he got a scholarship to a football program in Arizona. I was happy for him, but knew in the back of my mind that he would never survive in college on his own without someone to do his homework... He made it two semesters, two longer than I thought he would before he failed out of school...

Who did he really cheat in the end... same with these kids who think they're smarter than those who try to teach them. They are in for a rude awakening one day soon. Sad really...

I'm 20, and I grew up with both. I actually didn't have my first phone until I was 17, but I did grow up with video game systems. But more than anything I loved being outside, especially catching frogs, snakes, and insects (yeah I was always a tomboy), and biking and rollerblading. I had a pocketknife and spent endless amounts of time whittling as well...

You are an exception to the way many kids are growing up today.

The trouble many of us adults have is that the current generation may grow up to be too dependent on electronics.

I'm almost 80 and still don't have a smart phone. That is why I cant post pictures on this forum. I have a cellphone, but it is only a phone. No camera, no email, no internet. I recently was asked to borrow my phone and when I showed it to him, he said "gawd, it has a rotary dial" lol.

I really do wish I could post pictures of my more recent silver caches given to me or sold to me by neighbor residents of this retirement community.

About a week ago another member posted my first cache of silver. Last week it was silver jewelry.... Today I was given a 9 K gold whistle from Tibet. 12.4 grams.

When I was first given a cell phone to use for work, the guy's wife ask who was going to talk on it, because I hardly talk on a phone.

In today's society with the technology, we are raising a generation of illiterate people.

Kids glued to their phones are doing themselves harm, not me. It's the DRIVERS glued to their phones that potentially can kill me. What I would REALLY like is for someone to invent a car horn that loudly blasts "GET OFF THE PHONE AND DRIVE" when you encounter one of these morons. Mad? Yes. An SUV with DC plates nearly ran me over while I was crossing at a crosswalk with the light because he was busy on his phone. Unfortunately, the Montgomery County Police car showed up 30 seconds too late to see it.

My eyes aren't good enough to do everything on a smart phone. I do have a tablet to play games and read books on. I still read paper books, and even though I have hundreds more channels on TV than when I was growing up, there isn't any more (and probably there is less) real content.

Just another old grouch,

-- Tom

When I was 14 I got my horse so I spent a lot of time outside with him... still do.

Today I have a simple Tracfone- no iPhone or Smartphone and video games don't hold my attention like they used to. I'd much rather be outside detecting. It is saddening to see so many people my age with their noses in their phones. It's like: look up and experience the world people!

Warmed my heart to read your post Gabby...I raised my daughter the same..gave her a knife early, had her out catching frogs and toads and snakes and turtles and salamanders...she looks for turtles crossing the road, and gives them an assist...she takes care of weak and injured animals, yet she can skin out a raccoon and make something out if it if she wants..she can build a boat, and go do an impromtu River clean up just for giggles. ....She was homeschooled and raised without a TV...she took a test once, and had college level scores when she was 12...Although, I will admit, she has had a very hard time finding an honest and faithful Male Lifemate with a similar appreciation, skill on this Planet, gentle spirit and a wonderment for things, who isnt addicted to porn.....tragic to even type this out, but thats what has happened to many young/old Men! Stay true to yourself, we really like having you around here...it gives us hope for a better tomorrow!

Thank you Mud. I am happy to hear your daughter had the same opportunities that I had. I was homeschooled as well and take care of sick and injured animals when I can.

I stared at that picture for a long time trying to figure out what they are possibly doing.

I know.... waiting for the bus, they are studying for a test right?

No, that is what kids do on recess now!!!

Love the ruler example. Try teaching science to students who can't take measurements on almost any tool designed to take measurements. Lots of fun right there. The kind that makes you want to ram your own head into the wall over and over. Or having large numbers of students who read at an elementary school level, but have been passed on and now are in high school trying to read materials written at a high school level. By the way, what has happened to learning to read by sounding out the letters of a word then putting them together to say the whole word? I love how they are teaching whole word reading now without teaching the basics on how to sound the word out. Ask a student to sound out a word they have never seen before and take a look at their faces. When they can't do it, sound it out for them and say that new word for them. They act like you have some magical god-like super power. How are you supposed to figure out new words by yourself if you can't sound them out? Good lord.

Nice job raising your daughter right Mud!
Mine is 18 and while we are not into hunting or fishing, she sure as hell can change a tire, read a map, fix things and do most anything else she puts her mind to:yes:
