Depending on what it is, a sandblast cabinet. Works good on old farm relics- axeheads, plow blades, etc. I am fortunate in that my hubby has a good blaster and doesn't mind cleaning stuff up for me.

A tumbler can work wonders too depending on the finds size.

Some people use a vinegar bath, or you can use a commercial product like CLR or Naval Jelly. Just be careful what you treat, you don't want to ruin the patina on a valuable or historically relevant relic.
