Well, not sure what happened to my original post - it seems to have vaporized. Here it is again:

Hi everyone! I'm brand new to the hobby, having purchased an Ace 400 that arrived just last week. I'm already having a great time getting used to the instrument, and even had my first "real" hunt.

First, I recruited my 8 year old daughter to "seed" the backyard with 4 each of modern quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. She had a blast hiding them, and I learned a lot about my detector as I hunted them down. Much to my surprise, not only did I find all 16 of the "plants", but I managed to dig up an extra penny  Since our place is only about 12 years old, I really wasn't expecting to find anything, so even the 1964 Lincoln Memorial penny was a cool surprise!

I also got permission from the property owner to hunt an old 1919 school building & grounds that's in the process of being turned into senior housing. Unfortunately, when I arrived on-site, I quickly learned that I wasn't the first to hunt the property - not only did the construction guys tell me that I was about the 10th detector they'd seen out there since they started working, but I also noticed several plugs from previous visitors as I was detecting. It was clear that the property was probably hunted out, but I pressed on. I dug a few pull tabs and a bottle cap that fooled me, a modern key (bent), a 2016 dime, 2008 penny, and a partially crushed jingle bell - but I also managed to get one interesting "keeper". A small charm of what looks like a little girl wearing a coat with "PENNEY'S" written across the bottom (see photos). I have no idea on age or where it might be from (J.C. Penney promotion of some kind?), but I thought it was pretty cool regardless!

So, in my first week, I've got 12 cents in clad, and an interesting charm - I'll take that as a decent start for a noob!

Your post is there now !

Welcome to the forum from Western NY

:welcome2:

Yep, it miraculously reappeared! Maybe a moderator can somehow merge the two threads together? The original thread appeared as a title only at first - no message showed up when you click on it :?:

Thanks for the welcome!

Great way to learn your machine. I'm from NW Ohio myself, maybe we can meet up sometime?

Thanks bruinvikes! It was definitely a fun confidence builder, and was a serious help for getting familiar with the machine's features and capabilities...and helped to get my daughter interested a little, to boot.

I'm in BG, so it looks like we're pretty close - I'd certainly be glad to meet up sometime. I can definitely use some guidance from someone familiar with the hobby - and the legal aspects of the local area!

Hi Airmet, I'm in Lima. Are you anywhere near?

Hi ProDigger! We're probably about an hour apart. There is a detecting club listed in Lima - "Black Swamp Metal Detecting Club" (http://blackswamp.weebly.com/index.html), but I don't know if they're still active. When I was looking around their website, I couldn't find anything posted more recently than about 2010. But the website still exists, so someone must be paying the bills on it

Welcome from South Shore, MA. Good finds. Love the way you got your daughter to help.
Good luck and enjoy the hobby

Just so you know it is illegal to detect in your county. If you get permission from whoever owns the property your fine, but unfortunately it is not legal to detect a tot lot, sporting field or park.

Yes, I saw that the Wood County Parks District rules & regs effectively disallow detecting...I haven't found anything for BG City parks yet, but I expect the verbiage will turn out to be similar. That's okay, I am ultimately more interested in detecting private property anyway, although it would be nice to get more practice at a park, etc. I'll PM you with a couple questions - see if you can help point me in the right direction.

If this is true (a true rule that specifically says "no metal detecting") then just be aware: This would only apply to county parks. Not city parks within the county. Not state parks, etc... Ie.: it is not "border to border within all the county". Just the county parks that the county administers.
