This past weekend I decided to tumble all of my wheats. I also had a couple of religious pendants and a dog tag that were either copper or brass that I threw in with all the wheats. Since most of my wheats are pretty toasty I let them tumble for about 10 hours. When took them out and rinsed them off I set them out in a single layer on a towel to dry. While doing this I noticed a silvery colored one and picked it up and looked at it under a magnifying glass and it’s a steel war penny! 1943S. I’m amazed it lasted without rusting more.
Then I remembered in the other tumbler container I had the dog tag and pendants. Nothing great about the pendants but when I looked closely at the dog tag I could barely make out the word UNITED! That’s when I started looking up large cents to try and determine what large cent I had. The word united is on the backside of the coin and there’s also a barely discernible wreath. The only large cents with wreaths on the back are liberty cap large cents and draped bust large cents. Draped busts were minted from 1796-1807 and liberty caps from 1793-1796. Which one did I have? Upon closer examination I noticed a 5 in the date! So 1795 or 1805. When looking at examples of both the 1795 and 1805 versions it looks like the 5 is smaller than the 5 on the 1805 version. So I think my large cent is a liberty cap large cent 1795.
