Any ideas on what happened to this penny. Might be a animals or human it kind looks like a crescent moon, if you turn it sideways. Don't remember how deep it was I thought it was trash and kept going. I found it in a park along with the rest of those coins that day. The black mark is jut sharpie to tell size of normal a penny.
What could have done this ?

Zinc quickly corrodes. That is why they are used as "sacrificial anodes" in many marine applications.

I second what Rudy said. Looks like typical zinc corrosion. The reason why so many of us hate those Zincoln pennies. One they're this bad they aren't good for anything except feeding the trash can.

I have a whole bowl full of cents like that. Around here, the winter salt that gets on them really eats them up.

It's zinc rot. Very common in modern dug Lincoln cents.

At this time, the only coin you can't legally melt is the penny.

The ground just eats them alive.
I've dig too many that looked like a rat chewed them.
They aren't worth digging if the coin redemption machines won't recognize them.
