After a good week last week CRHing and getting only one comment :p
KT is posting this in hopes of a bit more interest. Despite the cold and snow and ice on the Royal Roads of the Kingdom on Tuesday, they were clear enough for KT to venture out of the Castle and get to the bank on Thursday afternoon. Sure enough, Loomis had delivered so KT loaded His 5 Royal Boxes in the Chariot and made a hasty retreat back to the Castle.

Started opening the boxes and ripping rolls around 2:30 and finished up after supper at 7 pm. Not a lot to report but here are the results:

Box 1 - 2 NIFCs
Box 2 - 1 40% Ag Ken, 1 NIFC
Box 3 - 3 NIFCs, 1 counterstrike Ken
Box 4 - 1 NIFC
Box 5 2 NIFCs

Totals - 1 40% Ag Ken (nice and clean one!), 9 NIFCs (kept 4 of them).

KT is still searching for the Walkers stolen from His Friend, but has not come across it yet....Have not heard of anyone else coming across them either tho, so perhaps the box is still out there!:laughing:

Anyway, enjoy the pictures this week and best of luck to ALL!

Are any of these worth a significant amount above face? Is it worth the effort or is it just for fun? Does the bank take them back with no fees or fuss? How many are in a box? What do your descriptive letters mean? Hope I'm not asking too many questions but I am new to this and trying to learn. Thanks

Glad to answer your questions. First tho, KT hoards silver halves so that is pretty much self explanatory as to keeping the silver 40%er.

NIFC stands for Not Intended for Circulation....starting in 2002 the US Mint stopped minting halves for general circulation, and cut the volume to ~10% of what it had been, the bulk being sold to coin dealers. Coin dealers would buy, cherry pick, and them dump them at the bank to get what they consider the better grade coins. So if you are trying to fill an album you have to either buy from them or CRH them. KT likes to get a roll of each, when possible, for each year He is CRHing...CRH stands for Coin Roll Hunting. With halves, when you buy a box from a bank, it is 1000 coins, and the cost is $500. KT buys 5 per week, hunts them, and then dumps at a different back to get His cash back.

It is a hobby. Hobbies are done for fun, but profit can be there if you are lucky and chose to sell the silver you recover. KT does not sell, but has been stacking up silver halves now for several years. Sometimes KT recovers proof coins and those do have a numistmatic value, depending on their condition.

KT will tell you it can be a lot of fun when finding several silvers, but is not quite so much fun when little is recovered of interest. The NIFCs are collected on the potential for their gain in value, should the US Mint ever quit minting 50 cent coins, or at least Kennedy halves. They have already been in existence from 1964, some 54 years, longer than most coinage designs stay around. No one carries halves anymore due to their weight and because few, if any, vending machines take them. They are going the way of the Peace Dollar and many of the short run smaller dollar coins.

As for the bank, KT does not dump the coins at the same bank where He buys them, but at a different bank that He has an account at. That way the cost of machine usage is free, otherwise it ranges from 8 to 12 percent, way to high to ever make a profit doing this.

Hope that answers all your questions....if not, ask some more! HA HA

Thanks for the response. Interesting stuff but I think I'll stick to digging!
