Thought I had a large cent until I cleaned it. Hit it with shovel and appears to be copper. Heavy. Home site appeared to be civil war or pre civil war.

If I blow it up on my iPad Pro with high resolution it looks like there are a few letters or numbers on it in places...maybe a coin that got put on the train track a few times?

If my scale is correct, i get 16 grams. I am wondering if it is just a "slice" of a copper rod? It's not perfectly round which is making me think it may not be a coin? I don't think we will ever know on this one.

Ok, about 1.0 to 1.5mm thick. Scaling picture its about 31mm diameter.

Could be an early British half penny. These are thinner than the US large Cent:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_halfpenny

Next is measure the weight and compare.
British half penny are about 10gram

US large Cent are 13.4 gram.
Corrosion will reduce the weight.

Possible this coin is of other foreign mintage.

The oldest British coins on the link I posted describe them as:
"Slightly irregular shaped copper coin"

Did you measure and compare to the chart in that link?

I was GUESSING about 31mm diameter but could be different.

Or it could be just a copper disk.
