I got out for a quick hunt today in a yard that just keeps giving. I found a three ringer and another smaller mystery bullet. I've posted pics of both and a 1917 mercury dime as well. Any ideas on the smaller bullet?

I would say, from the looks of it, that it was first cut and then animal chewed. It's appears to be about the same size as the top part of the three ringer.

Possibly a Barthalow. It is the only one I can think of with a punch hole in the base like that

I think that sometimes, soldiers would chew on a bullet to make their mouths water. Or, maybe a soldier bit on it during an amputation. Just guesses at this point.

Which is where we get the phrase 'bite the bullet' .

Those old stories have been proven to be false. They were chewed by animals, particularly hogs. If you think otherwise, just put one in your mouth and chew away. Your next trip will be to your dentist.
