I just wanted to encourage all the other noobs out there. You don't have to spend a small fortune to find things.

I like a lot of the diggers, and someday I might end up with a fancy all metal one, but for now this one does the trick. It started as a made in USA floral shovel that was just too short for me to be really useful. I went and bought a 1 1/4" domestic oak rod and sanded it down to fit the shovel blade and handle. I like my diggers a little longer than average, apparently, and this one is 47 inches overall.

It digs roots and flexes like an airplane wing instead of breaking or taking a permanent bend. The shovel has about a 32 degree lift so it's perfect to keep me from having to bend over.

Best of all, it was about $20 altogether, so it's pretty affordable.

Just get out there and dig, don't overthink it. I know that's my problem sometimes.

Nice! I like bargain finds that are useful, especially ones that lend themselves to custom modifications. I recently discovered that my local Ross Dept. Store has a gardening section.. err.. well, its a shelf with a bunch of gardening supplies piled on it. lol. But I got a great deal on some gloves, a small spade, and one of those hand rake scraper things.
