Winchester Shotgun Shell/Brass (Pic)

Found this last week and when I cleaned it off I saw Winchester on there. Also, the wad or something is still in there...is it old? Here's a pic:

I've never found one with something inside before...must be me!

I dont know when Winchester made "New Rival" probably in the 30's or somewhere in that time period. That is a carbon fibre base wad and they were in all the older shells, Winchester, Remington or whoever made them. Also was a paper hull...d2

Hey Rob,

I actually have a bit of time and can give you some info. The New Rival was a black powder shell that was introduced in 1897. Most sources list the end date as 1929, but the latest ad that I have been able to find for it is 1919. A sure range is 1897-1919 but possibly as late as 1929.

Nice find headstamps are actually great finds I've recently started collecting, but there also good in dating the place your detecting. Happy hunting.

Could be a 10 gauge shell.

You know it has some age because it is a 10 gauge.
