Sweet !

Federal Riflemans button

W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / NEW YORK 1837-1847

Can't say what the value is because I'd never sell it.

I agree, I would never sell it either. The last price guide by North South Trader says it should be between $50 to $75. I think that price is a bit low.

Sorry I picked up the wrong price guide. The latest says $75 to $125.

Civil war buttons are sweet, especially when specific to Riflemen, Artillery, Cavalry, etc..... Great find!!!

I think $50-$75 may be a bit strong in the current market. It would depend on the audience this is in front of. The style is pre Civil War. When the US instituted the US Cavalry, there was the 1st and 2nd Cav, as well as the 1st and 2nd Dragoons, and of course, the Mounted Rifles. Around 1862 (or 3, I can't remember), they were all condensed in to cavalry. The 1st and 2nd Dragoons became the 1st and 2nd Cavalry respectively, the Mounted Rifles became the 3rd Cavalry, and the 1st and 2nd Cavalry turned into the 4th and 5th Cavalry respectively. Why were you asking about value? If you are interested in selling please let me know.

I'm not interested in selling it , I was considering cleaning it some and just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to possibly ruin a very rare button. I have decided against cleaning it anyway.
