Has MD'ing turned you into a coin collector?

I was a coin colector long before I got a metal detector. Ever since I got a detector, however, I have become very interested in jewelery. I never paid much attention to jewelery before.

So, my question to ya'll is, did this hobby start you into coin collecting as another hobby?

Absolutely. I never thought of Krom as a coin collector, let alone myself. I remember thinking, "A coin is a coin. Why keep it when you can spend it?" I was even more stupid about collecting postage stamps (and still am, I suppose).

But finding those old coins really brings home the reality of what you've got in your hand. Maybe it's part of growing up ... or growing old!

"Maybe it's part of growing up ... or growing old!"
I may be growing old, but I'll never grow up.

Yes MDing has turned me into a coin collector. Before detecting i knew a little about coins but didnt pay that much attention. Now i have several indianheads, large cents, shield nickels, Rosies, Mercs, all sorts of coins. It has also got me into local history in a big way. I love finding relics just as much as coins and what ive been finding is more valuable than coins! Its like a book that has been closed for many many years and i have the ability to open it.

Have been collecting coins on and off for the past 8 yrs. Now I'm about to start MDing and can't wait to see what I can add to the collection...

I have started to collect coins too

Funny thing is that this site has started me to collect american coins pre 64 (lol)

I only have a few coins so far but am spreading the word that I am building a collection for my son

Coin collecting turned me into a metal detectorist. It's interesting how the two hobbys can have such a close relationship.

I can feel the change happening. I've gotten very interested in coin collecting after MDing for just a couple of weeks. I still haven't found and silver or anything else very old but after reading the posts here my interest has grown!

It has definately turned me into a collector. Finding coin's in the ground is exciting, It makes me wonder what could be next. Since finding coin's in the ground I have collected over 30,000 wheat pennies. I'm still looking for more.

It stirred up an intrest in selling coin's, I helped start a website and I am now selling them.

To answer Hoser's question, Yes.

I had a collection when I was a kid. Didn't know much but ended up buying some that looked cool to me here and there. I also inherated some coins from my fathers collection when he was a kid. I collected a lot of stuff when I was younger but would eventually lose intrest in all of them.

Then, I met my girlfriend almost a year ago. Her family always looks for coins on the ground. I watched her pick up money every day. Eventually I purchased some whitman folders to make things more interesting. I originally thought she would think I was a nerd for doing so, but she really got into it.

We still look for coins on the ground but rarely find anything we need. We have a day to day competition of who can find the most money though.

Our coin collection has grown out of control. We purchased the metal detector because of it. Hopefully we find some really rare stuff soon. We also go to the casino just to play nickel slots and look for coins there, and we have about $150 that we keep exchanging at the bank for more coins to look through. We go through about $500 a week(on a good week).

Silver coins are not easy to find. We find about a silver dime every $200. A silver quarter every $500 or more. So far our oldest dime found through the bank is a 1943 merc. Oldest quarter is a 1925 standing liberty.

Well, I think I've given everyone here far more information then they ever wanted to know. :-)

Well as a new guy at this MD stuff. it had a double effect , not only do I collect the pennies I find but also the worms that come with my finds it has turn me into a fishing person, those stripe bass love them.

An uncle of mine in tenn. got me started mding about three years ago. Every time he came to visit he brought his metal detector and off we would go. I had such a good time that I went out and bought my own detector. In my opinion, money well spent. I recently started a coin album. I don"t have any really old coins but the coins I have mean alot to me. So I guess mding has made me a coin collecter of sorts. Thanks uncle darrell for taking the time and getting me started!!!!!

I was a collector who turned to MD'ing to find new additions to my collection, but then started collecting civil war relics too.

I just hope to some day find a few coins that are worth, up to dollars!!!! Say a 1955 dbldie wheat back penny. Has any one found one while MDing?

I was a coin collector years before I began metal detecting. It was all initiated by my grandfather, who to this day still encourages my interest in history. He was a packrat and saved his change in jars in his bedroom closet. He had about two dozen big glass and plastic containers filled with coins that he had been saving there since the sixties. I would go through them and seperate the wheat pennies from the other ones, the buffalo nickels from the newer ones, and so on. Then he got me the Whitman folders, where to this day I have a full collection of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quaters. I was able to find most in my grandpa's jars. The only coin I ever bought was a 1909 S VDB penny, which I must add is NOT in the Whitman folder, but in a much safer place.

Then, once I was at the beach and saw an old man metal detecting. I followed him from a distance and saw him repeatedly digging up coins. I thought it'd be great to have one, and the rest is history. Now, I search mostly for coins but I love getting anything of interest, i.e. jewelry, tokens, buttons, relics, etc. It must be mentioned that so far I have not dug any coins older than 1965 (yet), but then again, I've only been back in the hobby since Christmas.

So, to answer the question, no, it was the opposite, really.

I also became interested in coins, I guess I was spoiled because the first coin I ever dug with a detector was a 1945 walking liberty 1/2 ( more details in my post OLD STORE FINDS). My oldest coin is a 1787 spanish 4 reals ( more details in my post COLONIAL TRADE ROUTE FINDS) I now have a good collection of coins to have never bought one.
I still enjoy collecting rings the most.

Coin collector before I started MD'ing, my main coin focus has always been on Jefferson nickels but now I have started trying to put together a collection of full step Jefferson nickels.

I was an MDer first, then a collector.

When you dig your first silver coin out of the ground, it becomes addictive. I just spent $150 on silver coins last month as a Christmas gift to myself.

One hobby, as opposed to Beanie Baby's or Baseball Cards, in an economic crisis, can actually increase your net worth when the price of valuable metals goes up..

I was an MD'er first. What got me started was looking up the information about the coins that I found. From there it has snowballed.

its funny that you started this post, because in my mind i have been thinking lately that these two hobbies go hand in hand! i myself have been a collector for years, but when i was young most of our family collection was stolen and sold by...another family member whom i wont mention. it sucked. my father both dug and collected, i dont know which came first, but it got me into both. lately, since its winter, (or supposed to be at least) i go to the bank and buy rolls and search through them for goodies. im a penny man right now but like everyone else i love silver and gold!

and like brooklyn said you cant go wrong with precious metal in a crisis!
