I hunt historical Fernandina Beach, Florida and I especially love curb strip hunting

There is a 50 foot strip that I have now visited three times. The first time I pulled a buffalo nickel out. The second time gave me an 1887 Indian Head penny, my first.

Went back a few days ago. The heat was oppressive and I didn’t even finish the whole strip. But managed 3 nice wheat pennies. One has “IN GOD WE TRUS” stamped on it. Nice little oddball coin.

Also an 1899 Barber dime. Been awhile since I’ve uncovered one of these.

I have the property owner’s blessings to search her property. Currently her yard is covered with bricks inches deep. She plans on getting them dug up and then I’m going to teach her to MD as we search the yard.

I hunt historical Fernandina Beach, Florida...........

Years ago I used to visit relatives just few minutes from Fernandina and we'd visit the beach and historic district at least once per trip. I wasn't thinking about metal detecting back then.

What's the soil like? Is it mostly sand?

My town is very old and yet I’ve nehad any luck with the curb strips. Go figure !

Yes, mostly sand. Right before the Civil War there was a terrible drainage issue. But there was an oyster canning plant with a mountain of oyster shells which were spread out everywhere. You encounter them all the time but anything below that level is very possibly pre CW.

Don’t give up. My oldest coin, a 1718 1Reale and this pocket watch both came from curb strips. The watch had emeralds outlined with gold for hour marks and the minute marks are dots of gold
