silver quarters amongst clad quarters

I'm new to this site and to metal detectors so if this question has

been asked, my apologies. My question is, I collect quarters out of

co-operated machines and constatly come across silver quarters

but I am unable to detect the distinct sound they make. Our counter

finds them after I turn them in and gets to keep them after switching

with a clad quarter. So I want to know is there a wand detector(or similiar)

that will differentiate clad quarters from silver quarters? For example, you

have a bag of 400.00 in quarters and there is one silver quarter in there,

is there a detector that will detect it?

If so what kinda of detector am I looking for. The smaller and of course

cheaper the better. Thanks in advance , Butch

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

Thank you for the reply

So to be more specific, if I have two bags of coins, one with a single

silver quarter in it, a detector would not be able to tell me which bag

had a silver quarter in it? That really is what all I'm trying to do.....

cause I know if there is a silver quarter in the bag I still will have to

locate it. I just need to know what bags have silver in it.

This is copied and pasted from the walmart web site.

"Can differentiate a solid silver quarter from a clad quarter"

Does this forum not send e-mails out when someone replies to your

post? Thanks again

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

First ; welcome. You have to set your self for an email notification when you add a post to get one.
Second ; A metal detector can diferentiate a single silver quarter from a single clad quarter. Silver quarters are those minted prior to 1965. Clad quarters have a copper colored band around the outside edge. There is no detector that can single out a silver coin from a mass of coins. Sorry.

<Can differentiate a solid silver quarter from a clad quarter">

Do you know what the above statement is refering to?

I'm trying not to be dense here, and I know my ignorance is showing

as I truly don't understand what I copied above means

<There is no detector that can single out a silver coin from a mass of coins. >

So a detector can not detect a silver quarter from a clad quarter?

It will beep the same for both?

Thanks for overlooking my ignorance on this subject....that is

why I'm here...trying to learn something.

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

If the coins are seperate, detector readings will be different for the silver from the clad.

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

A Minelab Explorer can "learn" a specific item or coin, and be set to reject all else. The problem with a bag of coins is that you have too much mass. Metal detectors are calibrated for coin sized objects. If you could separate the mass, such as the coins sliding down a chute or passing by on a small conveyor at a set speed, then in theory, the Explorer could pick out the silver.

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

There is no magic wand you can wave over a bag of $400 in quarters, and it will beep if there is 1 silver quarter in it, and not over the bag with no silver in it.

Thank you folks, those where the kinda of answers I was

looking for.

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

The best way I know of is to stack your quarters so that they could reasonably be held between your thumb and pointer finger and look at the edges. Any silver in the stack will stick out like a sore thumb. Still takes time on that many quarters but is several times faster then the one at a time method. Hope this helps

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

The Minelab EX-2 can be set to "learn" but a quarter is a quarter.00-29 silver or clad

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

I get alot of quarters at work from the laundry machines at different properties and I just pull them out as I run them through the coin cointer and replace them with a clad quarter! Once you are familiar with the silver, you can spot them quickly laying in a pile (not stacked, mind you) of clad just by their color.

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

sound is the fastest way. silver quarters make a distinct ring when dropped. I worked with money for 5 years and I gurantee I could drop several (100 or so) all at once and hear 1 silver quarter... The other guys at work didn't believe it until they seen it. They drop in change and I'd say... Wait.. let me show you something... works with dimes also although slightly harder to pick up..

Re: silver quarters amongst clad quarters

Just a thought............sounds pretty lame to me. Unless you got someone else around you to pick up those 99 clad quarters.
