E trac has a better angle on the handle, meaning easier to carry, ability to get more info on the screen at one time, more modes with ability to select 1,2,4 an multi conductive and ferrous. Explorer sounds much better on silver to me and seems to ID more correctly, with numbers, than the Trac. The 12 line on the E trac is a myth, numbers come in all over the place, 12 is pretty much just a guaranteed find. Both will pull good, deep, masked silvers, I have done it with both and still own both. I love my Explorer, and my Trac experience is minimal, but the 2 are very similar. The Explorer does have to be swung slightly slower, in the same conditions, but both can be enjoyed if you like going slow and covering an area, feeling secure that any doubts you have of digs is because of you, not the machines.

Had an explorer se, have used an etrac in the past, go with the etrac. If I were trying to save $, I would go with an explorer 2 or explorer xs. But not the se.

I'd choose the Etrac just because they are discontinuing the Explorer and Minelab only services discontinued detectors for so long.

Safari is a great machine you just have to really slow down as they dont recover as fast.
