Is it symmetrical? a pic or two from different angles and size might help. Could also be part of a musket trigger guard.

Looks like a piece of a musket side plate the way a curve starts towards the end... cool find!

I think you nailed it. The site dates back to the 1870s. I'm pretty sure it's brass.
