Anytime I want to get out a little while, I can walk to fields around our farm or the woods. I have several nice finds here, the oldest, a 1903 Indian Head Penny.
Today I hunted an hour and dug a pouch full of trash and junk but also this interesting pin. It says “Hortus Club Honor Member” Above it says ‘The Sower’ and a picture of a guy sowing seed. The back would have had a simple wire pin.
Best I can find out, The Hortus club was founded in NYC in 1952 and is limited to 30 elite horticultural members. I can find nothing about the pin other than they are plentiful on EBay I suppose a farmer may have done something to become a honorary member.

Unique! I like it!
It's great when you discover some interesting little snippet of history like that attached to a find. Limit of 30 members, too.... That makes it even more special.

You can sure get down a rabbit hole with some of these things. I am curious what made a person a Honor Member. I first found this club was founded in NYC in 1952 with just 25 to 30 members total. I keep reading news accounts of them giving talks and presentations in different places. I sort of got an ideal maybe they gave these pins out of these presentations. I’ve looked in my local newspaper archives and now I’m searching Google books for old magazines and books and etc.
Now I’ve found accounts of Hortus Clubs set up in the 1890s. Hortus was just Latin for horticultural. So I’ll keep looking. It’s always interesting
