Cast Iron Skillets....restoration complete!

Found these skillets in my dad's outdoor shed.....they'd been out there for over 20 years or longer. This is my first restoration & re-seasoning attempt.....turned out pretty good if I say so myself! Haven't cooked on them yet, just completed the restoration late last night....very easy to do, just time consuming.

Any other cast iron people here? Any newbies like myself?

that's awesome! those are the best to cook in.
 
Great job! I've taken many cast iron pans down to bare metal and restored them. Six coats of flax seed oil @ 500 degrees can give you a mirror finish.
 
Grilled some asparagus on my small skillet....worked perfect!

Cajun Chicken and Grilled Asparagus pasta!

Love those old cast irons; nothing better than a nice camp fire and some cast iron cookin'! :yes:

DO's and Skillets

Nice job on the restoration! I use skillets and dutch ovens for 75% of my cooking.
 
The only pans that go on my stove are cast iron. I have cooked on cast almost exclusively since the mid 80's. I really like cast over an open fire!

Nice job on the pan!
 
Nice! I buy them at auctions only if they are made in U.S.A. Been known to throw a rusty one in a big fire.
 
Do you have to re-season them after the restoration?

The re-seasoning process I did consisted of a light coating of Canola oil in a 200 degree oven for 15 minutes....I did this over-and-over 5 times, one right after the other.

Then, bump it up to 300 degrees for a final light oiling at 15 minutes. After this, wipe it down good and then put it back in a 400 degree oven for 2 hours.

You're done!

Just keep it clean and lightly oiled after each use after that.
 
I love cast iron. I will occasionally put a cast iron pan out in my grill with a 1/4 inch of bacon grease in it. I will let it set in the grill and when I use the grill I just leave the pan inside to heat up and cool. I will do this 6 or 7 times. On the last heating I will then dump out what is left of the bacon grease and get the pan real hot, let cool and then clean it out with plain water (no soap). I have left pans sit out inside my grill up to six months.
 
How did you remove the rust. They sure look good!

I placed all 3 of them in my oven (upside down) on the self-cleaning oven cycle for 4 hours.....temps reach over 500 degrees during this cycle. All of the rust and any old seasoning are baked off. Give them a good wash with soap and water to remove any leftovers.

Lastly, take a drill and wire brush cup (I used 3" cup) and bring it down to bare metal. After that, just start using oil on it as described in my other post above.

My oven got a good cleaning in that 4 hour cycle too! :yes:
 
Man im a southerner so you know we use the brakes off our cast iron skillets.
I love my big skillet I cook all sorts of foods in it.
Cast iron in my opinion is the best for cooking.
