MXT, how can I quiet it down?

what you lost wasn't the VDI, I think. What canged was description by the labels ( 25c > Button ). Correct?
Now. For that you have the explanation-chart. (directly under the display) There you can look for the target bar ID ( VDI ) and you'll see what target it could be in coin & jewelry mode ( or reverse ).

I had the same problems you are having and sold it and bought a DFX. I also have a XLT. If you want a detector thats nice and smooth and quiet, The XLT is hard to beat. I was spoiled from the beginning by buying my XLT first and in my opinion its Whites best detector
