this may be a stupid question to many
does the signal meter give a clue to how deep a target is, if so how does one use it

What kind of detector do you have? Does it have an LCD display or a big needle which leans from side to side?

Some LCD type detectors do have a depth indicator, but it usually kicks-in only after you have pressed pinpoint. Then the depth will be displayed for a few seconds.

If you tell us the make and model (like garret ace 250) then someone here will know if the unit can display the depth.

What Rich said...

...depends on the detector. There are also some older detectors with analog meter (like Fisher CZ5 or Garrett Master Hunter CX) which will show the deep.

But...there are also detectors in the market who have the capability of modulated audio. Means the lower the volume is by hitting a target, the deeper it is.

Hope this helps...
