If you want to detect at the local park or swimming area, and there's a swim or water hole, nothing to say that you can't detect around in the water's edge if it's shallow enough. A lot of jewelry can be found here. Pick a quiet day, when most people arne't around. If a ranger comes up, what's he going to say? That you can't dig holes, in the water? Hardly. This is one type of detecting I have success in, and while he's standing there, ask if you can detect the grassy areas, he just might let you. That's one way around it. Anyone with other thoughts or suggestions?

Things are pretty much "black and white" in my neck of the woods. You either can detect or you can't... For the State parks (includes some beaches) I need a permit (not that anyone ever checks at the beach).

I guess if you're not sure, hunting water is a fairly safe bet although you never know. I haven't had any negative reactions from anyone but I've heard stories...
