Alabama, by way of Detroit, Tampa Bay, Alabama and
So I haven't been to a casino in a while, back in Kansas there were several but here in backwards Alabama not a whole lot except a few Indian casinos with these stupid class II bingo machines.
I scrounged up a little money and went with a friend to one of those yesterday because I just had the itch.
I was just going to play a few one cent machines, maybe a quarter machine if I could find one, get a free breakfast buffet and scratch that itch but I was lucky and it turned out to be a better day than I hoped.
I found two machines that liked me, one was a quarter machine that I sat next to for a long time and stayed even so that was fun, even made a few bucks eventually.
Then I took a chance on another machine that was a minimum bet of 88¢ so I threw $20 in it and hoped for the best.
Bam, hit a minor progressive on the first spin and won about $60.
Breathing room...I stayed on that thing and lost some, won some more but eventually walked away with about a $200 profit so I was happy.
The person I went with wasn't close to being done and she got involved in some sort of slot tourney that was going to go on for awhile so I just stuck around and tried not to spend and lose that money.
A few hours later I still had most if it and I got bored watching her so went back to that winning machine and threw another $20 in.
Luck was still with me, I started winning again, kept raising and lowering my bet trying to hit a good one and on one of those raises, (up to a crazy $3.76), I hit a good line for $160.
Stayed on there and lost some, won some and on one of those raises I hit a feature, three coins in hope to win more with free spins.
Three choices, 15 free games with 234 ways to win, 10 free game but they add another line with 1024 ways to hit or only 5 free spins but with one more extra line and 3024 ways to win.
What to do, fortune favors the bold and I went for the 5 hoping for just one good line hit.
It happened, ended up with a $300 bonus on that one.
A little more time on that machine and I went up and down but eventually walked away with a printed slip that said $700 on it.
Not bad for an initial $20 investment.
The lady next to me watched all of this and kept saying she was happy for me but she kept feeding money in her machine and wasn't really winning so I am not so sure.

So now I got an extra $900 burning a hole in my pocket I managed hold onto and escape from that place with and time to buy a few things.

We need a new decent coffeemaker so done.
I want to buy the wife something nice so some of that money is earmarked for that and I will probably just hold onto the rest except for one thing...I deserve something extra special pretty for me.
I swore I would never spend any money on this hobby except for what I find long ago and I haven't but this is a special event so I might bend my rules a bit.
I traded for a Sharpshooter coil for my F70 early this year and it has performed way beyond my expectations in my difficult SE mineralized devil dirt.
It is quieter than my Fisher factory coils and can reach deeper than I thought possible in this state, not Kansas dirt deep but surprisingly deeper than I hoped it would here.
Now it has got me thinking...if that coil worked so well what might a bigger Nel coils do for me in my situation?
Probably not the Big Coil but one of the others do seem interesting...now.
Can one of them beat my Fisher 11"DD coil in depth?
Even an extra inch or two might make a huge difference for me.
My Fisher coil is ok, I can get decently deep with that one in the bad stuff but so far only to about the 8-9" area and usually in better black but still mineralized dirt areas.
In the red stuff I don't think it can get even that deep.
Most great older targets aren't much deeper around here than 5-6" but I have hit a few at that 8" plus area in better soil even with snipers so there are some around.
And in the not so great areas where even the Big DD coil can't get real deep will another coil get me more treasure?
We have hunted some really old great sites this year that should have produced but we walked away frustrated.
There must be some great stuff in a couple if them but we think they are just a bit too deep out of reach for anything but a PI unit and using one if those here without disc would be a nightmare for me.
No way to really tell unless I get one, nobody I know around here uses an F70, Patriot, T2 or F75 so I have no data to compare.
Do I take a chance and spend the money to see, I took a chance on a Mojave this year too and that decision worked out shockingly well.

So if anyone has any experience using a bigger Nel coil in our red dirt areas here in Bama, Georgia, maybe parts of Tennessee I would love to hear about it.
I will do research and there are posts mentioning the Storm, Attack and Thunder coils on units on this platform but none that I have noticed in my exact situation and dirt problems.
I will eventually get something, I deserve it and who doesn't love new toys plus this money is just found money to me anyway.

Digger, I have the hunter coil which is about the same size as the stock DD coil that you have. I've never used the stock DD 11" coil, so I can't give you a comparison. But, I do like my hunter coil. I also had the thunder coil and ended up selling it as it didn't seem much deeper than the hunter and it was more nose heavy, although it did cover more ground due to it's larger size. The hunter will hit my 8" red dirt, mica infested, super hard packed test quarter that's been in the ground for over a year. However it rings up at 14 on most passes so if I didn't know better I would pass on it in the field. I also have a quarter buried in the front "garden dirt" yard (much less mineralized) at 6" and I can lift the hunter at least 8-10" above and still hit it. It rings up in the low 90's. That's about all I can say about these two coils.

I'm contemplating the NEL THUNDER for the AT MAX. I'm looking to cover more ground. I also have been looking at the Hunter, but not sure if it would be an improvement over the stock DD. I'm interested in others comments too. Thanks for posting the thread. (And I always like a good casino story too) I gave up gambling in casinos years and years ago, but do like to hear success stories.

Hey Digger
Congrats!!!!! Thats awesome!
Also, its been awhile, I want to thank you for all the
contributions you put forth on this here forum.....
You have helped SO many people out, including myself when I started as a newb...... Anywho, thanks again. Get yourself a new coil and get at it!

Thanks man, I know your history with those coils, didn't know you had a lot of red dirt in NC.
14 on that deep quarter..weird.

When I had the borrowed Rutus it would ring up as iron on nearly all passes on that quarter also. I have to use the mojave in high GB on this section of my yard. Funny, but if I put the mojave on low it will make a ton of noise, but comes in with a steady strong signal on that quarter. I also have a 7" clad dime buried in that same area and it will ring up as iron on most passes with the F70 also. Ground balance comes in at the high 80's in this area.

Nooooooo..Don’t settle for a new coil ,that’s small fries..You need to get back in that casino with your winnings and double down, whole hog .Then you get whatever new machine and accessories you want..They got a Casino up the road, run by Native American people..Ask to see the chief, his name is “Counting White Mans Money”:

Congrats on your winnings! I have the Nel Tornado for my Omega 8000, the depth increase over my 11'' DD was marginal at best. You will cover a lot more ground with it but is nose heavy bad.

Congratulations there D27! I have the NEL Thunder on my Atpro and as you know, the stock 11"dd on the F70...

The THUNDER is great for water hunting on account of its weight is not an issue when its underwater...but when you get up slinging it on the beach, its a REAL front heavy work out....I dont know about putting one on the 70 for dirt work...I think it would be too heavy for me and turn a pleasant experience into a painful one....

Just saying...it would sure be noticeable ...The trade off on whatever depth/coverage I might gain I doubt would be in the positive...But hey, its YOUR money!

I like how you’re thinking! Spending house money on a money finder! However I think mud has a great point regarding weight.

Weight isn't all that big of an issue, I usually go slow here and will glide across the top of the grass most of the time plus I am pretty strong so carrying a bigger coil around for a few hours wouldn't be a huge deal.

Still don't know if a bigger coil would actually get me a whole lot deeper than the Fisher 11" in my dirt.
Or, could the Hunter coil do the job and get me slightly deeper than the Fisher coil because it is built a bit different.
Also they paperwork says the Hunter is good around iron and we are all about iron here.

Decisions, decisions.

It's not the weight so much as it is the balance. The thunder coil only weighs a few more ounces than the hunter, but the little bit of extra weight really throws the balance off. But, like anything else once you get used to it, it starts to feel normal.

You could pick up an Equinox with that money you won:hide:

I have a NEL 15" attack coil that I use on my etrac. My experience with it is that the target id numbers are accurate. It is a little deeper than the stock 11". I would say an inch or 2 deeper here in the mountain clay. The only reason I have it is because I make a couple trips a year to the beach and it helps me cover ground. BUT its a beast to swing on the etrac. I had to build a harness to deal with it.

I doubt you'll gain much depth in your soil with anything bigger than the sharpshooter or 11"dd.

You may be correct, but as I said there is no way to tell except to get one and see.
I can say the Sharpshooter I got from you this year has worked extremely well here...maybe a bit better than my Fisher sniper.
Very sensitive to even the smallest items and maybe just a little deeper too...definitely quieter and seems to handle my soil and site conditions surprisingly well.
That is the thing that makes me curious, can a larger coil from this company do as well.

It is very weird here, we have small areas of better black dirt but that is rare.
The most prevalent black dirt we have still GB's in the mid 60's up to almost 80 depending on the area and the actual red dirt can go up to the mid 80's but luckily I don't hunt in many sites like that.
Plus the iron, it is everywhere from microscopic tiny stuff infused into the dirt up to nails and other pieces that can be huge.

This summer I was with a couple of friends hunting a couple of very old home sites that were some of the oldest we ever hunted, pre civil war.
Not many homes around here are still standing from that area.
We were able to get to the 6" area or so with my F70 and big coil, an AT Pro with a Thunder coil and a DEUS with a decent sized coil and found a few things but nothing deeper and nothing from the 1800's or very old.
At one site I dug an 8" hole and we put a quarter flat at the bottom then replaced the plug.
Neither I with my Fisher and big coil nor the Pro with his big coil would touch it.
This was in black dirt with no clay.
Disheartening...my Machine could easily hit 12-15" in good Kansas dirt and could get to 8" or so here in other sites even with my Fisher sniper and still in black dirt that seemed similar but evidently wasn't.

Could be the fresh dug hole was an issue but if this was happening at other older sites and there are good targets even at 9-10" we would miss them all let alone anything deeper.

As far as the new Minelab technology who knows if it would work well in this mess, a friend that hunts with an E Trac here can't come close to the depth I can get in the more difficult areas with my Fisher and even misses targets I have found easily with my snipers at 5-6".
Reviews seem good on the Equinox but nobody that has tested one with good results has tested one in MY strange dirt and I wouldn't even consider spending that kind of money unless I see hard evidence it would work better here than what we already have...and I won't be that sucker/guinea pig to be the first to find out and maybe be disappointed.

As I feared before I moved back here the best unit for my area to find the most and the deepest is still going to be a PI machine, but what a nightmare it would be to use one of those in this kind of place for a guy like me that hates to dig useless holes and junk.
I would give up the hobby before even considering even trying to do that.
I still have hope for the Manta PI with discrimination FTP is working on will come to the market someday, if it truly can disc out iron successfully and still penetrate deep that would be a game changer here for sure.

Till then maybe...maybe a new coil might get me a bit deeper then Fisher tech can, even an extra inch or two might make a difference.

I run a NEL Tornado 12x13 on the Explorers and get another inch of depth and more coverage with it over a 10.5 or 11" stocker...a bigger coil should work in your case on the F70 as the speed/recovery on that platform is excellent as I remember from my Fisher days...with a faster recovery the iron in your dirt probably won't bother it more than it bothers the 11" coil.

Thanks Capt...I have mentioned before many times to the village that I only own an 11" DD coil as a gift thanks to YOUR generosity.
It might have a thick layer of JB Weld covering the entire wrecked up bottom but it still works and has found me much treasure so I will be forever grateful.
There are no better people out there than those I have come across in this hobby and mostly on this forum.

I am leaning toward the Tornado...a few have told me that they either got a bit deeper over the factory standard on the F75 platform with that one or at least got some more solid, better ID's on the deeper stuff over the factory DD.
Still might not gain anything at all in my dirt but I got some free money and these are cheap enough to take a chance.
There must be a reason this one and the Sharpshooter seems to be two of their most popular coils and I already have the Sharpshooter...and love it.
