I found two unreal quarters in a corn field. Cant make up my mind which is nicer. The barber is probably my second best condition coin ive dug. (As far as old silver)
But man this seated quarter is in pretty condition as well. And its an old one. Its almost twenty years older than my previous oldest seated quarter.
So which ones better?
And anyone think the barber is gradable? It has one small light scratch on the neck and the back looks perfect except fading of the lines on the right side of the shield. The rim is perfect on both sides.
It has lost its shine though. Its got a whitish patina to it, but its consistent and not splotchy like some coins you dig

Ive seen coin experts post threads saying no coin dug from the ground would grade better than a VF to a XF.

My opinion and only opinion is the Barber. That being said I would be proud to have either coin. Even at that I don't think the Barber is without ware as present on the Eagle and the Shield. I am no expert that is why it is only a opinion. Congrats on two great coins. Trapper

Nice finds, I'm not into grading coins, to me I think the Barber coins are the best looking coins we ever had. Never seen a seated coins, but it older than statehood here, but what a find that would be for sure. Nice finds both, really enjoyed looking at them.

Having trouble deciding which is better is a good problem to have! I would go with the 1855. Not much wear or scratches on that either. The finish/patina/coloring will cost ya points on the grading table, but who cares? You found 'em in a corn field! Good post.

I am happy with both. Its just amazing the barber is in such good condition. The seated is too (relatively speaking) I just hate when coins only look great wet&under light. When this one dries its very splotchy. I put it on electrolysis but its not going to fix that. I am torn whether to give it its shine back with some baking soda and my fingers.or not. Its not a valuable coin so im leaning more towards cleaning it.

The barber was covered with dirt and I could see it was in great condition so I left it in dirt. when I came home I put it In electrolysis. The dirt bubbled right off along with any black tarnish. It worked really well.

Thanks for looking. And good luck.

Im just curious about the barber's grade. I know its not mint but its just so nice looking compared to ALL my other coins. Except this one barber dime I dug. It too is in super good shape. Ive just always wondered if this dime and now this quarter are worth getting graded. The cost of it versus the final value of them, im unsure of.
I just dont know anything about grading.
I cant believe they were in a corn field and survived.
Thanks for looking and GOOD LUCK

Both are very sweet looking coins. Barber is definately in better shape but I really love that Seated. Cleaning is a personal choice to you. Since it's not a key date I would shine that baby up though others are likely to tar and feather me for saying that.

No doubt the barber is nicer, however the seat3d with the Arrows is more rare. Only mint3d two years in the 1850' and 2 years in the 1870's.

Hannibal- nector, those are beautiful condition ! However, I notice they're not S mints. My heart bleeds for the east coast guys, who will mostly find P mints :hornetsnest::sissyfight:

They are great looking coins but my 2 cents worth says they aren't worth grading. They will more than likely come back with the dreaded environmental damage label.

Ya....... no
1897 s key date half
1894s half
1913s key date dime
throw in a few new Orleans, some Denvers.

Id say we do all right over here on the RIGHT SIDE!

Haha.
I do wish I had a better shot at gold coins though.
