Eyeball Iron from the river

Was out fishing with the kids and spotted this. It looks familiar, but I can't quite place it. Forgot to add something for scale, but its about 5 1/2 inches tall and 3 wide. I know someone here knows what this is. :yes:

Also, how can I preserve something like this? It might be junk, but looks neat with all the rocks stuck in it.

I agree with turbo housing, and would add that it's from a John Deere, probably a marine diesel.
