I dug up this big nut in my yard and what is odd about it is what it's made of. The nut is brass with a copper coating. The only reasons I can see for being brass is either to prevent making a spark or for good electrical connection.

Possibly, or from an old boat motor kind of thing..brass/bronze is used a lot around things in the water too...you live near the water?

I don't live too awful far from water and did dig up one of those cone type prop nuts this summer.
