Rifle headstamps

I was doing some hunting on an ex-US Army base. I dug a bunch of shell casings with the head stamp markings of "R A 17". They are 30-40's I believe (7.72mm?) - I haven't calipered them yet. Some live, some blanks. Definitely Remington make. Is the "17" the year they were made? This base was created for WWI training. Also found a ton of .45 lead as well (no casings).
 
Remington Arms, and 'yes' 17 is the year of manufacture.

BTW, .30cal is 7.62mm not 7.72mm.......typo?
