After searching the Green Bay area (with no luck), for the "Little Wizard" stud finder that so many of you have modified as a poor mans pinpointer, I happened across what might be a useable substitute.
Harbor Freight sells the "Cen-Tech 5 in one stud finder/voltage tester", at $9.95.
Finds wood, metal, high voltage wires and has an LED light and built in 18" tape measure.
Length is 6" x 2 3/4 at widest. Detection area appears to be about 1 3/4 x 3/4.
Air tests picked up a penny at 1/2", nickel about a 1/16 greater and a quarter at about another 1/16. It sounded on a large piece of iron at about
2 1/2". Has a tone and red led for signals. Played with the sensitivity and got detector width down to about 1 1/4" but lost some depth. Repeatedly found a
buried penny at 1/2".
Have'nt taken it apart yet so I don't know how modifiable the unit is, but for me I think it will save some time searching dirtpiles.
Just thought I'd pass this along for those of you who like to tinker.

I got mine from harbor freight. For the most part 1 1/2 to 2" is pretty common. Its a strong little sucker, but not water proof. Cant bet them on the beach when sifting thru all that sand.
