The Buffalo nickel was minted from 1913 to 1938.

In this podcast, you'll learn:

Why the Hobbs Manufacturing Company caused a one-year delay in the release of the coin.

Why problems with the coin design caused it to be changed midway through the first year of its issue.

What a mint employee named Mr. Young did that caused some Buffalo nickels to be worth thousands of dollars today.

Why the identity of the Indian, and the identity of the buffalo (which isn't a buffalo) are both still somewhat of a mystery today.

Here's the story, at http://thetreasurecorner.com.

Just found my first one today...didnt know they were clad..its showing copper type material on the edges

They aren't clad, they're an alloy. I've never seen one with copper on the edges. Maybe the one you found was in heavily-mineralized soil, and it picked something up from the dirt?

I've dug some in red Alabama clay, and they had a pink tinge to them.

so, which ones besides the 37d are worth money? whats the diff. between a fatty and does the fatty weigh more? just trying to learn more, thanks.....cliff.

Don't know what you mean by a "fatty"? If you mean the 1913 type 1, I doubt that there is any practical difference in its weight from other buffalo nickels.

As for values, here's a quick guide:

Thats pretty cool info... i knew the design was changed in 13 but never knew the real reason! Thanks for the knowledge!!

The edges are chipped and it looks like copper green underneath..

DC, looks like there's a heavy layer of some sort of chemical/mineral crust on it.

Did you dig it in a nuclear dump?
