Headed to my favorite park today and dug up this poor Jefferson nickel about 5 inches deep. I've never seen a nickel get so badly corroded...red dust on it as if it were rusting! Sadly, I was unable to discern the date, but from the condition and depth I'd say it's been there a while....

I would give it the 70/30 vinegar and peroxide treatment. Cleans them right up!

Thanks for the tip, alas I did soak it in the vinegar peroxide mix (for an hour) but to no avail. Instead it erased most of the obverse so that it's now difficult to discern any lettering or Jefferson's portrait! Oh well. It makes for an interesting novelty conversation piece at least. Glad it wasn't a buffalo or a V nickel! :-)
