I live in upper michigan and I know it's a long shot, but has anyone ever dug an Indian spear or arrow head made of copper. I know of a guy who's found quite a few but he's not sharing. I would just like to know if anyone has and could tell me about it. I've been detecting for 5 years now and have found alot of nice stuff, but the Indian artifacts are on my bucket list.

Wish I could help , but most of my native American artifacts are just the usual eyeball finds like points and skinning tools . But let us know what you find out .

I found one about 3 years ago and didn't even know what it was at the time!
It is by far my favorite object ever recovered with a detector:shock:
I know of 3 other Wisconsinites who have dug them also, at least in the last 3-4 years.
good luck bro:D

Thst is an amazing find and you are very lucky. most are over 3000 years old. And the fact that it made it all the way from the copper country to Wisconsin is amazing, and I wonder how it got there. They may have traveled from the copper country or it might have been lodged in a deer that survived and migrated over there. Nice find man. I've been searching for 5 years up by the copper country and found some raw and flow copper but no spears yet. Good job

Wisconsin is known for its own copper deposits.

Hey Cliff, just curious, what part of the UP are you from? I'm originally from the Keweenaw though moved away a number of years ago.

I'm originally from gladstone/ escanaba area but I moved to marquette last year

I know from research that the indians traded and traveled to get copper throughout the Midwest.
I have found several small pieces of float copper here too.
I found the point in a farm field and I don't recall how deep it was, but certainly 6" or less:yes:

Don found a spearhead a while back that was massive and like 20" down if i remember. He posts here infrequently but was featured on the nightly news in our area. From what ive heard certain wisconsin tribes either learned copper metallurgy or traded with UP tribes that did because in the fox valley there have been alot of copper tools found.

Marquette is a nice little city. Both my brothers live there. Was just up there in December through unfortunately it was to visit my father in the hospital and say my good byes. He passed in January tough with all the health issues he'd had for the past decade it was a blessing for him.

Sorry to hear that. Marquette county is near impossible to detect with all the iron deposits .

Hey I was just looking through old posts......and saw this post....
Had you ever found anyone to look at the item to give you an idea on its age or origin?
I had dug something similar last year and am dying to have someone look at it....I have sent pictures to several universities and such but no replies yet.
Just wondering if you knew of any specialists in the subject?
thanks , Bob

I have a distant relative in Michigan that found one quite a few years ago , they are rare but they are found from time to time.

I did research online then confirmed it with a curator at the Milwaukee Public Library.
I sent them a picture and they confirmed it is about 3500-4000 years old.
They have an extensive collection of copper culture (artifacts from native amercians) unfortunately, approximately 0% are on display.

truly spectacular find!!! I'm from WI, found a beautiful good size copper nugget but your find is incredible!!
