Not a button. Broach / brooch?

I could use some help identifying what this item is. It’s approximately 28mm tip to tip.

I'm thinking it may have went on a saddle bag. Cool relic, hopefully someone can ID it!

Not saying this is what it is but the general shape reminds me of a Major or Lt Colonel insignia with the plating erased thru time. Just wishful thinking and guessing!

That was my thought also. Major was goldish looking and lieutenant was nickel or silver colored. Don't know about pre WWll but say from the 1960's onward they had a straight thumb tack sort of back pin with a metal snap on fastener instead of these 2 prongs.
