Flying with a metal detector

I know some of you guys take some great vacations and bring along the stick. Any advice for transporting one on an airline and still have it function by the time it gets to destination? Are you using a hard case like a Pelican or just cushioning it into the middle of a bunch of clothes? Might look to take a trip this summer and my mind got wandering

If you can get it past security, and fit it in a guitar case, your fine :laughing:

you know now that i wonder about it, i wonder if a detector can be put in a guitar case.

I've got the musical talent of a toad! No guitar cases in my house

Maybe disassemble the coil and electronics housing to pack in the checked luggage and carry on the upper and lower rod? I've carried my tripods with no problems.
