After seeing the 1st Terminator, and watching technology advance, I could see that becoming reality some day. Sure, I get/got made fun of, but it doesn't change my mind.

It amazes me how openly people invite this stuff into their lives, for the sake of convenience.

Anyway, about a week ago, I'd heard mention of a book from Hawking which is set to be released. In it, he warns of the dangers of AI.

This leads me to believe, I r a jenius.

Lots of links, I just snagged this one:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/stephe...l-intelligence-could-be-threat-to-human-race/

Stephen Hawking has warned that artificial intelligence could one day "spell the end of the human race."

Speaking to the BBC, the eminent theoretical physicist said the artificial intelligence developed so far has been useful but expressed fears of creating something that far exceeded human abilities.

"It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate," Hawking said. "Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete, and would be superseded."

Hmmm. I just might have to get that book.
I agree with the general gist of what you're saying, and it amazes me that folks are still buying up the television and computer services that put a listening device into your home and/or car, even after the stories that have been surfacing.

Humanity is doomed.

after spending a career in software development I fear socialism/communism more than AI. It is too easy for a human software developer to put in one line of code to screw up the whole program and bring it to a complete halt. Complex computer programs are extremely fragile. Look at the recent Delta airlines screw up. Some bad code shut down their operations for 1.5 days. The last two years Macy's code screwed up and disabled their point of purchase abilities during the Christmas rush costing them millions of lost profits. This year they demanded that their IT staff be at work 24/7 during the black Friday holiday shopping period. nothing bad happened this year.

Now if all humans are dead, that is another matter, but who cares.

<tinfoil hat on> But couldn't it be possible for advanced AI to be designed to prevent that from ever happening? <tinfoil hat off>

It's not just AI , tech in general is making us stupid. How many times have you pulled out your cellphone to do simple math that you once did in your head with ease? Ask a youngster to do a quick math problem and the phone will come out. You can see it when a young cashier has to figure your change during a purchase. I remember when I was young having to search through books for the answer to lifes mysteries, now google does it for me.

Gauntlet, you is a genius!!

Finally, somebody gets me :D

Sometimes I like to mess with a cashier by giving them an odd combination of coins, in order to get back less change.

You can see the hamster wheel start smoking from their ears, and it's like they freeze-up

It's not Artificial Intelligence that I'm afraid of, it's native stupidity that really scares me.
