Look what I found at the Goodwill Store

Very cool retro detector. Did you find it by swinging a coin back and forth above it? :p

I got something like that for Christmas 1970. I think mine was a Radio Shack though. But it looked very much the same. I left for Navy boot camp just a week later on new years day 1971. I never saw that metal detector again. I have no idea what happened to it.

Neat score !!!!

Found the year info you were asking about -

"The first was the GD-48 which was listed as new in the 1969 Summer catalog."

the above quote was from this page -

http://www.w6ze.org/Heathkit/Heathkit_053_GD48.pdf

also found a page that has the schematic listed -

Gary, thanks for the info!. This thing is major uncomfortable to swing as it is about 4 lbs. Not balanced good at all. I'd hate to have to use it for very long, though those old blue box Coinmasters were pretty heavy too way back when. When I get some time I may try to fire this thing up. Thanks everyone love the comments!

OMG!! I had one

"Antique" Heathkit GD-48 "Metal Locator". Also had the build manual. For $3.99 I got it just as a wall hanger/curiosity. It takes an obsolete battery with a clip like a 9 volt but bigger. The plastic is cracking and looks like someone added a connector. Anyone know what year these are from?

My Dad and I built a Heathkit detector back in 1972. It was a gerat Father-Son activity, I learned a lot. I took it to a nearby Civil War site when I was 12 (like th day after it was finished) and I found some Minie Balls from the Civil War. I still have it, but it's dead.
