While I was out in metal detecting today I came across 98 to 99 on my vdi. When I dug the object out I thought it may have been a meteor but it was not attracted to a magnet. It was quite heavy for its size and did not scratch on the side of my shovel to show that it was lead. So I scratched on it with a Scotch-Brite and noticed it was copper. I live in northwest Ohio and thought it was kind of odd but found out that the Chippewa Indians would trade copper nuggets from northern Michigan. And also read that glaciers may have brought them to Ohio.

Question is now that I have it cleaned is it necessary to seal it so it does not tarnish. Also would like to mention this was found in the middle of an open field.

Here is a little better picture of it. A camera just does not catch how nice it really. A camera just does not catch how nice it really looks

That's a very nice find. Looks like a smooth placer nugget. I doubt that it would tarnish very quickly. I would try polishing it with just a jewelry polishing cloth, trying to maintain a good natural look. I'd also want to find more.
