Is there any way to determine the age of a buckle? Found this today near the foundation of a farm house dated to the 1600's.

That's called a batwing buckle. Some say they're from the 1700's, but others say they're not that old. My personal opinion is they were used in the 1700's and the 1800's. That's a great find, though. I've dug dozens of buckles over the years, but never that style.

Any idea what that buckle was used on?
It looks flat so not a shoe buckle?
