Had to take steel wool to this... Can make out a few words but not exactly sure what this is from...

Words I can read are, Fahrenheit, melt wax, solder power cable, specifications for, made in, Patent...

It has numbers around the outside near the edge.

Is it a dial for an oven control? Seems a little more industrial for household appliance.

About the size of a silver dollar.
Any ideas?

with the small hole maybe it was a thermometer that hung in a wood or gas oven? or on a wood stove?

Industrial temperature readout from a foundry or oven. The stem for the indicator (pointer/arrow) came up through the center hole and the second hole shaped like a crescent is for calibration. You loosened a screw that held the faceplate in place that set in that hole and rotated this plate to reflect the accurate temperature in the chamber. Once the dial read correctly the screw was tightened and the dial was calibrated. Judging by the items listed I would say a small smelting or tempering furnace.
