I'm trying to date this button recently dug from a field. It is a two piece, and I believe that the back half is cast and has makers mark WB CO on the shank.
There are no other markings. Waterbury Button Co. the maker, I think, but this is not their normal marking a a coat button. Any ideas of when this was produced? Button measures 7/8 " across the face. Scale marking on photo is for one inch with 1/16 inch division.

Thank you.

That exact button is for sale brand new on many websites.

I did find this:
The history of the Essayons Button can be traced to the earliest days of the Corps of Engineers. As early as the American Revolution, there was an effort to distinguish the uniforms of the engineers from those of the rest of the Army.

Aging it may be difficult. I guess if you knew more about the property it was found on, you could guesstimate the age.
