Hello,

I found some heavy, silver "rocks" with my Prizm 5. I will see about getting a picture together and posting it. Anyone have any idea what they might be? The rocks are smaller than golf balls, shiny silver, very hard, and as heavy as lead. Thanks.

Since you don't have your location listed, even a guess would be tough. Could be lots of things.

Hard to tell from pictures alone. They look like iron slag, although I'd expect them to be more rusty. Was there once a foundry or blacksmith shop in the area? If you can get an accurate weight, and volume (from how much water they displace in a graduated cylinder or small measuring cup), you can calculate their density. Iron should be about 7.9 grams per cubic centimeter whereas lead would be more than 40% denser, at about 11.3 g/cc.

It is definitely not Galena, and it seems to be a form of metal slag, from a blacksmithing operation. Possibly Iron.
