Unfortunately most nickels come out of the ground looking like hell. The town I grew up in was once the shoreline of what is now Lake Erie. The soil there is extremely sandy with excellent drainage. Most coins I've found there including pennys come out of the ground in better condition than anywhere else I hunt. This 1900 V Nickel is probably the nicest nickel I have ever dug.
Post a pic of your nicest pre-Jefferson nickel.

This was the oldest coin I've found this year. It was completely black when I dug it and I could barely make out 1867. Since it's not a key date or valuable, I cleaned it a little and put it in a flip. My first shield nickel and I'm happy to have it.

They come out of the water pretty nice, compared to dirt..

I found three on this hunt, and one of my trifectas..

I have dug 4 V nickels so far.
Two have been smooth as a baby's butt with just barely enough small details for me to ID them, another was better but loaded with crud and this one, despite its condition, is my best one.
Still thrilled to have it in my collection.

You would have had to wait at the door of the mint to get any sharper on that coin..

Congrats, I don't even know how many Vs I've found, maybe 10-15... Still never found a shield...

This is the ONLY pre-Jefferson dig. 1914 Buffalo. The V nickel I got in my change at the gas station about a year ago.
