I left this thing in vinegar for a couple of weeks. Took it out and sprayed it with a hose and most of the big, thick flakes came right off. Left the scenes mostly gray - except where the head began to narrow to the edge - that was black. (?)

Left it to dry - knowing a think cost of rust would coat it but I didn't have my grinder ready to smooth it out.

Saw it a few days later lying on the step and thought someone had wet it bc it was shiny. Nope. Just rust.

I've never noticed this before. Common?

grinding that much rust off is gonna be a lot of work.

There's really not much there. It was grey metal when I got some (*except for some spots). But I can always throw it back in vinegar.

***Edit. I think one side is better than the other. This side may be worse - and your point is taken: it will take a while. It'll probably get a vinegar bath again.

*The other axehead hasn't been touched yet. Just found that one.
