Ever looked on Ebay for metal detecting/treasure hunting text books? If not, you should! There are some real beauties out there from vintage to recent publications, and talk about cheap. I was just poking around on there and found a bunch of wonderful vintage books that I already have. There's always something new to learn, even from the old text books. Perfect for the upcoming Winter months where many of us can't get out for 6 straight months! Just query "metal detecting book" or similar and you'll find some real gems out there...

I just noticed one available out there that is a outstanding sub-vintage text book that I already own, and have just recently started re-reading again. It's a Whites publication called "Taking a closer look at Metal Detector discrimination" by Robert Brockett.

Although it's older, it still applies 100% to what we do with our detectors almost all the time - discriminate! Learning some of the background technical facts of discrimination as pertains to our hobby will without a doubt help you better understand your own detector's operation, and as such you WILL find more treasure. Lots of pictures, diagrams and excellent commentary detailing how to make better use of our detector's discriminator settings and why they work the way they do. I highly recommend it!

Anybody else have any favorite on-line sources for such publications that you'd like to share?

Taking a closer look at discrimination is one of my favorite books!

Amazon is one of my favorite on-line sources. They probably don't have as many detecting books as ebay, but they are sometimes cheaper than ebay - as far as new books goes - and if your order goes over $25 and you're not in a hurry, there's no shipping charge.

There are several books written by our members in the "Member Links" section of the forum.

Some detecting clubs have a library of books/videos they let members checkout. Might be another reason to check out any clubs in your area.

Four books that every treasure hunter should read:

1. Treasure Hunter's Manual #6 - Karl von Mueller

2. Treasure Hunter's Manual #7 - Karl von Mueller

3. Coinshooting - H. Glenn Carson

4. The New Successful Coin Hunting - Charles Garrett

The first two books are a rollicking ride through the life of Karl von Mueller, a unique, opinionated, and fascinating character. Lots of treasure hunting tips along the way, but fantastic to read even if you aren't into metal detecting.

Carson has written several books, including at least two followups to this book, but this one is the one to get.

And Garrett's books are maddening for their promotion of Garrett products and exclusion of other brands, but this book has enough valuable insight that it's worth putting up with the informercial material.

I was sorely tempted to put my own book on the list, but I'll leave it to others less biased than myself to judge.

Big Snip

Thank you for sharing as I just ordered the two first ones on your list

BountyHunter, you found Karl's books? Way to go - they can be very difficult to locate.

How much did you have to pay? Those things often sell for $70 or more.

I bought them used, and I have just received an Email that they have shipped at the end of the day this Friday the 12th.

I scoured the internet and found alibris to have them. Yes the new ones go for around $70.00.

Again much thank for pointing me and others to those books

I like anything from Ed Fedory {sp} and also Christian Davis
"the relic hunter" {fedory} and "Digging" {Davis} are my 2 favorite books.

I wholeheartedly recommend the "Detectorist" by Robert Sickler. It is a great book for those getting started in the hobby.

Dan's Being Humble

Guys, Dan is being humble. He wrote "The Metal Detecting Manual" which I have read cover-to-cover and think it's one of the best general MD books out there.

I just got Treasure Hunters Manual #7 off of Ebay a few weeks ago. I have had #6 since the early 80's. I am currently reading 7 and have read #6 numerous times. Every time I read these I want to quit my job and become a desert scavenger, treasure hunter and gold prospector. Karl Von Mueller must have had a great time!!
