Are there any great books on metal detecting? Mr. Garrett seems to have a lot of them for sale. Are they all great works - or do they all say the same things? I've found other authors on Amazon.com, but most of those books received so-so reviews by a few readers.

I've been reading the messages in this forum for about a week. You guys must know.

do a search on this forum. There is a thread on the same subject only a couple of weeks old. The Garrett books leave a lot to be desired. "Urban Treasurehunter", and "Detectorist" are among the best.

Glittering Prospects by Joan Allen is a great book. Out of date (pre motion detectors) and goes in and out of print. Bit like a history of U.K. metal detecting but packed full of useful hints and tips that can improve your finds in any country. One or two copies come up each year on E-Bay.
