Other hobbies?

Been collecting railroad date nails for many years now. Nails with a number for the year were put in rr ties when they laid the track. That way they could tell when the ties needed to be replaced. They usually went from 1900 to the 70's or so. Steve in so la

This 1903 was listed at $300.00 last I checked. Most are way cheaper though.

Really neat collection ! (and I learned something new :D)

Amazing how even some simple things can develop such value !

Great collections/displays everyone,,never knew much of those railway items.

Fishing , gardening , home brewing ,....and seriously thinking about getting some simple blacksmith tools and try my hand at blacksmithing.

Let me know if you do. I can give you a few tips that will make your life a lot easier and more enjoyable

Cool , thanks. I did some welding and fabrication in the military so I understand a little about working metal , just not much about working it by hand the old fashioned way. But it does have my interest.

I won't try to tell you what to buy, but I can tell you what to avoid. And I can help you with some of the little things that are important about equipment setup so you will get the most out of it w/o beating yourself up.

Raising and training a dog is the one "hobby" that can love you back

I really miss my German Shepard. I never had much luck in training him. He pretty well had his mind made up by the time that I got him. He had been trained as a guard dog and at least I got him to where he didn't attack everyone he met when he was off of his chain. The one that him him before me thought that it was funny to sic him on people while he held his chain.

We definitely understand about missing beloved pets, our previous dog, a border collie mix, we had for about 15 years before she passed and I cried like a baby, our home seemed so empty without the pitter-patter of paws around the house that we adopted another border collie mix from an SPCA about a month later, she is about 5 years old now.

Besides the other hobbies I mentioned in an earlier reply , I bought my son a hobby level RC car for Christmas that is upgradable and we can spend time together working on it to improve it , and have fun outdoors with. He just didn't pick up on metal detecting like I hoped , for most young kids its exciting at first but before too long detecting just seems to take more patience than kids can maintain. I'm looking to buy a used RC for myself so we can work on multiple projects together. I will take up that hobby if it means I can get that kid interested in something besides video games

Neat idea, at least it's something you can do together that holds his interest !

......hey, if they still make something like the item below then maybe you can have him metal detecting WITH an RC car !

I used to walk the old rails looking for those back in the 70s when they (and RR insulators) were hot. Nowdays date nails are kinda hard to find as most of those old ties have been replaced or removed. Used to find them in telephone poles too. I think my oldest one is 1918.

Welp, it's a mixed bag for me...hunting as long as I can remember. That would be my #1. Gun and archery. For some reason I have an affinity for things with a german bloodline,..that spilt over into air rifles. Also like art,..used to draw as a kid and have picked it back up lately,..my kids into it. Presently working on my 2nd pen and ink. Have done some taxidermy years ago and still enjoy working with a euro mount on occasion. I'm pretty much an antler/bone addict. A few years back I picked up carving,..I'll post some pics if I can figure out how.,..have done a few powder horns,..enjoy scrimshaw. Another thing is I love tiger maple, my woodworking is basic but I do make some bases on occasion for some of my carving work and love to refinish old tools that I can find with "figured" handles on them. Into old axes and Victorian advertising as well,....so like I said it varies a bit.

This was my 3rd antler carving,..the giraffe bone shoulder blade is my current project,...with a tiger maple base of course. Base is not finished yet so it still looks very dull.

Aaronc,

That's some really cool work there...

The grain really pops on those pieces, what type of wood is that? I'm going to guess, curly hickory?

<°)))>{
