I know it's a flat button but was wondering if this could be used on baby cloths ? If not, what could it be used for ? It's a dime in the pic.

We usually refer to them as cuff buttons, but they could be from other places. Some military units in the civil war wore the plain flat buttons. And I think some of those had buttons on the back that were small. For civilian use I don't suppose they were restricted to male use, so maybe off a woman's blouse. For the most part those buttons date from the 1790s to the 1840s.

Get some mineral oil from home depot or somewhere similar, you might be able to get it cleaned enough to see if theres any writting on the back and research it. The mineral oil will help clean it without altering the natural color of the metal like olive oil can do.

Maybe a shoe button? Although I don't know if shoes with buttons were around during the flat button era.
