I haven't been out detecting for a while now, but I pass our
local airport at Southend every day.
Yesterday and today the "Sally B" which is based at the
Imperial War Museum, Duxford, was parked on the apron.
I couldn't resist a picture.

It was one of the aircraft used in the film "Memphis Belle"

Nice, spent a lot of time at Duxford, we were stationed at Greenham Common for 2 years back in the 80's. Love that part of the UK. Thanks for the memory! HH

Very nice pic Alan. There was an air show here this summer, and one of these beasts flew right over me while I was out hunting. What an awesome sight. :wow:

I found out today that it's in for a paint job.
On one side it's the Sally B, and on the other side it's painted as the
Memphis Belle. They've done this before at Southend, when they made
the film "Memphis Belle". This lets it depict two different aircraft in the
air.

Thank you Alan for the picture of the B-17.  I have had the honor of being inside one at an air show in Maine a few years ago. My fathers brother, my uncle "Stanley "pete" Roy was a waist gunner that completed his missions, (prior to the missions being reduced) those guys flew into German strongholds without the  long range fighter protection that came later in the war. When he returned home he went on a bond tour with Martha Raye and others.  Just to show you how much room there really was in them planes check out the attached pic. Not "Pete" But in Memphis Belle  they looked kinda roomy....not so.
I have hundreds of ww2 pics that most people have never seen.

Thanks for the picture Gil.

I can only begin to imagine what it must have been like for the crews in
those planes, flying at thousands of feet over occoupied Europe.
Especially when there were people doing their best to kill you.

Talking about bands, my mother saw Glen Miller play when he was over
here during WWII. He did a concert at RAF Debden in Essex, where she
was in the Womens Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF).

R.A.F. Debden, I was trained there as a dog handler for the WRAF. Many years ago.. How small is this world??

My mother was stationed at RAF Debden, then at nearby Castle Camps.
They were bused in every day from Safron Walden.

I can remember Debden being where they trained Military dogs and their handlers (including USAF). We used to go gliding there when I was in the ATC (Air Training Corps) in my youth. ;)

The base is still there, but has been used by the army for quite a few years now. It's a shame but a lot of the old RAF bases have been closed down and built on. Debden was one of the busiest bases during the Battle of Britain, before being used by the USAAF, we often pass by that way.

You probably flew over my head!!! I met my husband there, he was in the USAF picking up a dog. We spent many a day at the Black Cat cafe, Les's greasy spoon we called it. Nice area, beautiful countryside back then. A lot of good memories!

We went on a base tour of RAF Mildenhall today, and ended up
on this KC-135. A great day out, the Airforce personel were so friendly.

You are walking in my footsteps! We were stationed at Mildenhall for 3 years and Lakenheath for 2 then Greenham common for 2. Cool picture!

Funny you should say that, this is one from Lakenheath in July.
We live near Southend-on-sea in Essex, but my parents live in Watton, Norfolk.

( I do have other T-Shirts )
